Lotus Train: Ninh Binh → Dong Hoi
The shortest overnight Lotus runs, and the most efficient piece of routing on the whole line: spend the day on the water at Trang An or Tam Coc, eat in Ninh Binh, board late, and wake up at the railhead for Phong Nha. Because Ninh Binh is two hours south of Ha Noi by rail, boarding here rather than in the capital buys you a whole extra day in the north without costing you a night in a hotel. Ninh Binh station is in the middle of town, a few minutes from the Tam Coc guesthouses, so there is no long transfer at the start of the night. Cabins are private two-berth and four-berth rooms, made up before departure.
