Lotus Train: Ha Noi → Dong Hoi
This is the leg people take for Phong Nha. SE19 boards at Ha Noi station in the evening and sets you down at Dong Hoi soon after first light, and a car covers the fifty-odd kilometres inland to Son Trach in about an hour — early enough to be on a boat into Phong Nha cave before the day heats up, and early enough that the caves are still quiet. Dong Hoi itself is worth the hour you will spend waiting for that car: the station sits a short ride from a long, unhurried beach and the remains of the old citadel gate. Cabins are private rooms rather than open carriages, in two-berth and four-berth layouts, with bedding made up before you board, air conditioning, a reading light and a door that locks.
