Lotus Train: Ha Noi → Hue
Ha Noi to Hue is the classic overnight on this line. You board in the capital after dinner and step off in the old imperial city in the morning, in time for the Citadel before the middle of the day makes walking it unpleasant — the station is close enough that a taxi to the Ngo Mon gate is a short ride, and close enough to the Perfume River hotels that you can drop bags before check-in. A full night on board means you arrive having slept, not having endured a night bus. Cabins are private two-berth and four-berth rooms with real bedding, air conditioning and a power socket at every berth. The alternative — flying — costs you the morning at both ends and an airport transfer each side.
