Lotus Train: Dong Hoi → Ninh Binh
Phong Nha to Ninh Binh without going through Ha Noi — the northbound half of the routing that lets you string the caves and the karst together and keep the capital for the end of the trip, or skip it entirely. Boarding is close to midnight in Dong Hoi, arrival in Ninh Binh is early enough to leave bags at a guesthouse and be out on the Tam Coc river before the boats fill up. Ninh Binh station is central, so nothing about either end of this leg involves a long transfer. Cabins are private two-berth and four-berth rooms, air conditioned, with bedding made up before departure.
